To use CyberTracker for data collection:

1. Download CyberTracker onto a PC
2. Get the required hardware
3. Design a Screen Sequence and upload it to a PDA
4. Import a digital map to map data
5. Export data for analysis

Icons

• User-interface studies and our own experiences have shown that after a short time, icons are easier and faster to use than text.
• You may create icons, text, or both for each screen. Pressing down on an icon will show its text title.
• In addition to importing your own, you can use the included library of over 700 environmental icons.

Screen Design

You can design screens in a variety of formats:

Choice Screens

• Radio list   -   select one item per screen
• Check list   -   select multiple items
• Multiple Choice   -   select an item prompted by a question

Number Screens

• Number   -   select a number form a grid
• Number list   -   select numbers by scrolling
• Digit   -   type in a number on a keypad
• Distance   -   enter distance and direction

Note Screens

• Note   -   write a note
• Question Note   -   write a note prompted by a question
• Short Question   -   type a short note prompted by a question

Other Screens

• Barcode Scan   -   allow a barcode scanner to be used
• Title   -   for a title or other static page
• Special types of screens

CyberTracker allows flexibility of design:

• You create the sequence in which your screens appear.
• Individual choices can lead to different screens.
• The Stop button can bring the user back to your first screen.
• The OK button can bring the user back to the screen you designate.

HotSync

Even schoolchildren can download the data they collected, by putting the PDA into its cradle connected to the computer, and pressing the HotSync button.

Viewing

Data can be viewed as a table or a map. Any Bitmap or TIF map image with known coordinates, as well as ESRI Shapefiles, can be used to automatically map the data you collect with a GPS.

Within a master database, data can be queried and displayed in different ways in different Projects. One project might show all your vegetation data on a false colour satellite image, while another may show your vegetation and bird sightings on a topographic map.

CyberTracker can export data as:

• Excel Spreadsheet
• Fixed Width Text File
• Comma Separated (CSV) Text File
• Informix Text File
