Inventé par le zoologiste amateur Louis Liedenberg, du Cap (Afrique du sud), le logiciel CyberTracker permet à tout un chacun d'inscrire des notes sur un PDA à propos d'une observation faite sur le terrain, et de l'indexer à partir de ses coordonnées GPS.

L'objectif de départ est de permettre aux amateurs de nature, aux touristes, aux défenseurs de l'environnement ou aux gardes des parcs naturels de stocker des observations qui pourront ensuite être exploitées par des scientifiques qui ne peuvent être tout le temps sur le terrain. Mais le dispositif a déjà d'autres usages, tels que la chasse, ou la recherche de criminels...
